Where is Harpurhey?
Harpurhey is a borourgh of the City of Manchester which is a major city situated in the North West region of England. The community is located about 2 miles North of the City Centre. Manchester is arguably the UK's second city (Unless you come from Birmingham or Glasgow!) It is a City that has been extensivily regenerated. Including the city centre which is seeing a major economical boost. This regeneration was fueled by the IRA bomb which ripped through the city centre in 1996 as well as the Commonwealth Games that took place in the summer of 2002.
Manchester is a lively City with a warm sense of community and we are proud to be rooted here.
The Community
The stigma
According to the Manchester Evening Newspaper (Read More), Harpurhey is the worst place to live in England.
Harpurhey is a community with many difficulties. There are problems with crime, drugs and alcohol. It's a community which barely lives above the poverty line with many families struggling to make ends meet through unemployment and the effects of drug and alcohol addiction. It is made up of a number of council estates and terraced housing.
Investmest and Regeneration
The local government have invested heavily in housing and environmental regeneration which has had an effect on the physical look of the area. We thank God for this but money can only change the physical for a time until it degrades back to it's original state.
What is needed is a spiritual regeneration of Harpurhey that is lasting. Harpurhey Community Church as well as other churches in Harpurhey know that God wants to change Harpurhey into being a rich community full of the Hope and a testimony of God's grace and goodness.
